4 years ago I did a shoot for this wonder designer and friend. read on!
Meet Nafisa! I had the pleasure of recently shooting her brand new line on the beautiful coat of Malibu. She has created a fashionable tribute to her Bengali background entitled KAARU! Here is more about her and her work in her own words. After reading, feel free to follow her on twitter @NafisaFairuz.
“My name is Nafisa Fairuz Chowdhury and I’m the founder of KAARU. Last year after graduating with an Apparel Design and a Business Marketing degree I was looking for ways to do something to help bring exposure to the beautiful works created by craftspeople in Bangladesh, my home away from home in Los Angeles. KAARU is a bengali word and it means an artisan. I was always passionate about the artisan’s work and creative flair but, I didn’t know how to proceed or what to do with my limited ability. I only knew that I had to do something for them as I’ve always appreciated their unique works. During my last trip to Bangladesh on April 21st 2011, I had the opportunity to work with a great group of artisans at Thanapara Swallows Development Society, located within a rural village in Rajshahi. The trip was very short but I had the experience of a lifetime, and it encouraged me in founding KAARU. KAARU’s mission is to expose the beautiful hand-made products by rural artisans in Bangladesh. I also feel that it is my moral duty as a Bengali-American to help the Bengali Artisan develop their lives and their children’s lives through the selling of quality and stylish hand-made Fair Trade products.”
